So, I lied
It has been way too long since I posted last.
The good news is I graduated from Nursing School in December, and moved back to Austin. Since then I have been settling in to my new place, new job, and new cats. Back in February I had to put my 13 year old cat Lucy to sleep. She had something like kitty COPD and the medicine quit working for her. I am just glad I got to spend a few more months with her and she was happy during that time. I got Lucy when I was a junior at LSU (for my first degree). Then when I decided to go back to school away from Austin, my parents offered to keep her at their house. This was for the best, I had moved back in with them already so Lucy was comfortable there. Also we had a vet that we loved taking good care of Lucy with her health issues- no stressing the kitty with breathing problems. This meant for the last 2 years I have lived without a cat in the house, only to visit on vacations. I have had a cat since I was 3. In that time, the only time I did not have a cat actively in the house with me were my first 2 years in the dorms at LSU, and the last 2 years in Houston. But, I always knew that I had my cat at home waiting for me to get back to them. After a few restless nights without a cat around I went to Town Lake Animal Shelter and began to look for a pair of relatively young cats or kittens to adopt. I ended up with two Maine Coon littermates, Lino and Maia, that are 5 months old in this picture (see my next posts). They have certainly kept things hopping around here.
My place is almost fixed up enough for visitors to come over. I am working on installing the living room floor right now, and the bathrooms just need some touch up painting, hardware installed, and a little decorating.
In Griffin Yarns News -
The Represent! Hat is now available through Ravelry. I am doing a final check on the first Sock Club Pattern to be available for sale to the general public and it will be for sale in the next few days. It will be available as a Ravelry download (links coming), and print copies can be ordered by your local yarn store. I’ll post when it is up.

It’s been a long time
I am sorry about how long it has been since my last post. (why do I feel like I am in confession?). I was busy studying for the comprehensive exam I have to pass to graduate from Nursing School, and dealing with computer issues. The good news is I passed the comprehensive exam! and I got my computer back. Hopefully the computer won’t need to go back to the shop.
In Griffin Yarns news- The first shipment of the Sock Club went out a week ago and we have reports of the packages being recieved. If you are a member of the sock club please let us know that you have recieved the package, if you have not done so already. You can contact us by email, comment on this blog, or on the forum board we sent you the link to. This is a private bulletin board for members of the sock club. In a few days I will post a picture of the sock pattern included in the package and some more information on the pattern and my design process.
There is also a slight redesign/refocus of the website coming. I will be incorporating Griffin Yarns updates in with my technique/educational posts and other general posts. The blog title may change, and we will have better access to the free pattern downloads. There are more free patterns that will be posted along with the Represent! hat pattern, but we are waiting until the new page is set up.
That’s all for now, I hope I don’t take as long to post next time.

It’s not easy being green
In honor of blog action day here are my top five tips to be a green knitter. Unlike Kermit’s signature song it is easy to be green when you knit.
1. Use full spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs in your work lamps. They allow you to see more detail, and make color matching easier. And they are kinder to the environment and your pocket book.
2. Ride public transportation. Sure it may take longer than driving yourself, but you have time to knit and/or listen to podcasts while in transit. Another reason I like riding public transportation is that I am not the one dealing with the other yahoos driving on the roads. I’m in Houston, TX, not much public transportation here, but I still manage to use public transportation for a major portion of my commute to school and clinicals. This also saves me money on parking in the Medical center which can be up to $10.00 per day.
3. Use reuseable bags at the grocery store. There are a number of patterns out there for you to knit your own reusable bags. The one I use is the stow away shopping bag from Oat Couture – it folds in to a pouch. I have 2 that I currently use and a third in progress. I have loaded the bag with library books and it is still comfortable to hold and use.

4. Recycle your yarn (1). Save your scraps for another use. I save all my sock yarn scraps for trying out new patterns, and to make repairs. I use other yarns for general swatching, cast ons, waste yarn, and scrap projects. Some people make amazing things with their scraps while others use the scraps for decorating. There was a big discussion with lots of ideas on Ravelry this week. I have scored some beautiful silk yarn that I am going to redye for only $6.00 for three sleeveless shells worth(approx 600 yards or more each).
5. Recycle yarn (2) Unravel and repurpose the yarn from ufo’s that you are not going to finish or find sweaters made of nice yarn at thrift stores and unravel them. I scored some beautiful silk yarn for only $6.00 for three sleeveless shells. I have approximately 600 yards or more from each shell. I am planning on overdyeing the yarn.
I’ll be back as soon as I get through all this work I have to do to pass my comprehensive exam to graduate.

Instant Karma
It felt real good on Tuesday when I dropped off the hats collected at the Yarn Harlot’s visit to Houston. All the preemie hats went to Texas Children’s Hospital and the rest of the hats went to the Star of Hope Mission. Both places were very happy to recieve the hats.
This was an especially good week to be doing something good. It is an especially busy time in nursing school. Exit exams are later this month and it is time to be applying for jobs to start in January if you haven’t already. I also have been looking at my schedule and wondering where I’ll fit everything in. For now I’ll take it one day at a time and be sure to make some time for knitting every day to relax. Even if I have to let my apartment suffer, my mental health is more important.
I am enjoying my new camera, and I will have new pictures after this weekend. Now I’m off to pack to go to my Parent’s for the weekend.

Delay in game
I promise I have the sample done for the ch, ch, changes second part. I even took pictures of them. I then bought myself a very early birthday present of a new camera (birthday’s not until Nov.) so now I have to redo the pictures or I won’t be happy.
To make up for this here are a couple of pictures taken with my new camera for your enjoyment.
A philodendron of some kind / my Rainbow Socks made out of Lorna’s Laces Rainbow on my new sock mannequin
- If you haven’t figured it out. I try to store all my pictures on flickr, so you can just click on them to look at larger copies.

CHOKE and laughs
Sorry to take so long getting this post out. I had a lot to do yesterday and I had to be at my clinical site at 5:45 this morning.
The Yarn Harlot visit was a riot. She had us rolling in the aisles, and the warning beforehand to use the bathroom or risk wardrobe malfunctions was needed. I then ended up hanging out and visiting until midnight getting my books signed somewhere in there. Now what you really wanted to see:
Here is Stephanie doing her Vanna impersonation showing of swag she got from Twisted Yarns
Here is a side view of the basket full of hats with the traveling sock.
And finally Stephanie pounds some knitting mojo in to the Missoni Scarf Knock off I am knitting for my sister. Currently my sister does not knit but she has taken to looking through my Interweave Knits to find things she might like to have, and she has recently expressed some interest in possibly learning how to knit. Hopefully the mojo will work its way through the scarf and my sister will learn how to knit.
These next 2 pictures are of the 53 hats that will be going to the Star of Hope mission one of the largest organizations helping the homeless here in Houston.
These 17 preemie hats (2 with matching socks) collected will be going to Texas Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit along with a number of hats that Twisted Yarns had from their regular knitting group (that’s the pile in the bottom picture)
Thank you to everyone who donated hats, including but not limited to: Susan Wallace, Hanna Pierro, Martha Elizabeth Winston, Dolores Rose, Ruth Parks, Ray Whiting of Knitivity, Kat Rocha at Kat Gets Cross Eyed, and Kim Christiansen KimnCocoa. If you donated a hat and want your name/blog here leave me a comment and I’ll add it to the list.
Now it’s time for me to go to bed. I was up at 4 this morning, and it is now almost midnight. I promise the follow-up post on substituting yarns in the next few days. I have the samples done and photographed, now I need to write the post around studying for an exam on Monday.

Represent Hats
I was asked to take over the hat collection for the Yarn Harlot’s Houston visit next Tuesday (Sept 18th). I am excited to be a part of this. I promise pictures of the collection and a full accounting of where the hats go.
I was trying to get my hat pattern up on the Griffin Yarns site, but we ran in to some trouble getting our free patterns up. For now I will be hosting the patterns on my box.net account. The link is in my sidebar.
The pattern is for a simple roll brim hat in worsted to heavy worsted weight yarn. The picture shown in my last post is made of Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride, and I am working on another in Brown Sheep Country Classic (discontinued). This hat can be made in many colors or one color. Since it takes approximately 100 yards of yarn, it makes a great stashbuster. My first hat was finished in one evening. My second one is taking longer, but that could be because I only get 5 minutes to work on it in bed before I go to sleep.

Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes (part 1)
I am one of those people who can’t leave well enough alone when following a pattern. It even spills over in to my cooking and drives my mom nuts. I’ll take a recipe that is totally new to me, and change it up without testing it first. I have been pretty lucky and my changes are usually in grouping tasks together, performing a task in a slightly different manner to get the same result or modifying the seasoning.
This tendency to play with a pattern or recipe is very visible in my knitting. I have only used the specific yarn designated in a pattern a handful of times. I also make alterations to the pattern to get the garments to fit me better, or allow me to use my own handspun with a slightly different gauge. What I don’t get is the fear some people have about substituting yarns. I have seen people who have to use not only the exact yarn, but the same color as the model. This is fine if the look of the finished garment is exactly how you want it. For example my sister wants me to make her the new Caroline sweater from Louet in that exact colorway and yarn, but that is because she loves it exactly as shown.
I have developed a simple guideline/corollary to follow when substituting a yarn in a pattern.
The more alike the yarn the easier the substitution.
For example I made the Chinese Sweater from the Fall 2003 Interweave Knits. The pattern calls for Lamb’s Pride and Nature Spun Sport by Brown Sheep. While I really like these yarns I would have had to order it by mail didn’t like the colors I could get. I chose to substitute Araucania Nature Wool and Elsebeth Lavold’s Silky Wool in the pattern. These yarns worked well as a substitute because the fiber contents were essentially the same as the called for yarn, and the color variation in the hand dyed and tweedy yarns, was acceptable or even desirable.
I also substituted Knit Picks Shine Worsted for the Berroco Touche in the Alexander Romper. The gauge listed on the ball bands was pretty much the same (there’s a range on the Shine) and the fiber content of cotton and modal was almost identical.
I however would not substitute the Shine Worsted in for the Lamb’s Pride in the Chinese sweater even though they have the same gauge because the different fiber contents act in a very different manner.
General rules for substitution using this corollary:
- Compare the gauge on the ball bands. Do not use the pattern gauge!
- Compare the fiber makeup.
- Compare the construction.
- Compare the colors. Solid vs. variegated.
I’m working up some samples to demonstrate these rules for a future post

It’s alive!!
Griffin Yarns is now open!! We are taking reservations for our sock of the month club. Come by and take a look. If there are any European yarns you are having trouble finding in the US let us know and we will try to find it. There will always be a link in my sidebar.

I Can’t Stop Loving You
I have been in love with German sock yarn since the first time I saw he amazing patterning and bright colors of Regia. I fell even deeper in love when Opal was introduced to the US. Since then I have asked my friends and family to bring me back sock yarn when they travel to Germany. Every time I get a “yarn souvenir” I was amazed at all the colors that are not available here.
Here’s a pair of jaywalker socks and Saartje’s booties out of some Regia my sister brought me back.
Last year my sister brought me a new brand of sock yarn that was qually amazing, and I wondered why couldn’t you get the same yarns here? (she also brought me back the yarn to make this jumper by Anne Hanson of Knitspot)
This summer my sister and I have finally worked out a way to import all the wonderful European yarns that are hard or impossible to find to the US. We decided to start a sock club to introduce all the wonderful yarns. I am so excited about all the amazing yarns we are bringing in for this club. I am designing some neat patterns for the club as well. Sign ups are limited, go to the Griffin Yarns link to sign up.
In other news I finished the Alexander jumper and it was well received by the mom, as were the bunny and juggling balls I gave to big brother and sister. (sorry no pictures of the juggling balls right now- they pattern is from the Summer 2003 issue of Knitter’s Magazine).
When I gave big brother and big sister their presents they immediately opened them and started to play with them. A sure sign of success. Then Nana got out a discovery zone pop up basketball goal, and the bunny was dropped by big sister to go play with the balls. This entertained them for a good half hour, until big brother started to drag the goal through the house leading to it all being put away by Nana.

500 Miles
As my dad would say I have been remiss in posting (he likes to use fancy words when simpler ones will do). But I have a good excuse. I have been getting my yarn stash entered in to Ravelry so I can access it while I am in school. After photographing and entering my yarn on my stash page at Ravelry, I added up the yardage of all the yarn entered to date (at least 3/4 of my yarn) I have 28.4 miles of yarn in my stash. I was reading a thread on a Ravelry forum where people compared their stash this way. I was surprised I have a moderate stash, some stashes were under 10 miles and some were over 50.
I am also about to head back to Houston for my last semester of nursing school. I had a few projects that I needed to complete. I finished the tablecloth for my mom and it is gorgeous(pictures below). I also finished the bunny rabbit doll, and I just have to sew the snaps on the romper for baby G. (he was born on 8/6 (3 1/2 weeks early). I’m off now to finish packing. I leave tomorrow! eek!
Oh Yeah! I was at my LYS Bluebonnet Yarn Shoppe yesterday and they had the new Kaffe Fasset Regia Sock Yarn. I got enough for 2 pairs. Take a look.

It’s raining, It’s pouring
I had hoped to have an update before now with more pictures. But the rain won’t stop here in Austin (my home during my externship this summer). I gave up and finally took pictures inside today please forgive the mess.
- I’ve made a good bit of progress on the rainbow socks. One foot is almost done and the other is halfway done.
- I’m currently on stripe 15 of 20 of the Missoni Scarf.
- And I just pulled this rabbit out of the UFO pile to finish for a big sister project. This will go to the big sister of the baby who will get the Alexander Jumper from Berroco #245.
I also got this off of a friend’s blog and went to enter. “Those ladies over at 5 Minutes for Mom have done it again… This time the contest is for a 37″ flat panel TV from Best Buy. Go enter!

Welcome to My World
Welcome to my world. I am a knitting and dyeing obsessed soon to be nurse. I am currently back in my birth city Houston, TX.
This blog will chronicle my further adventures in knitting, dyeing and other things. I just got my beta membership at www.Ravelry.com and I am in the process of adding my stash and projects to my page. My Ravelry name is knitrn. A link is on the sidebar if you want to come play with Ravelry as well.
As I get them edited, I have some patterns to post as well.
My current knitting
- Alexander Romper from Berroco #245. I am making it out of Shine Worsted, and it is just the most adorable thing, but I still have 10 million ends to sew in on it.
- A Missoni knock off scarf for my sister.
- Rainbow Socks – These go everywhere with me. They are my third try at finding a pattern to work with the Lorna’s Laces Rainbow Yarn.
Here’s Buddha modeling the projects:
Just Finished
- Jaywalker Socks – This pattern is addictive. The only problem with the socks, is taking them off. They act like a chinese finger trap and get smaller in diameter as you tug at the ends, making it tough to get them over the heel. However, if you scrunch the sock up as you pull it over the heel they come off easier.
- Saartje’s Booties – these are adorable – I finished them in 2 days and I just got the buttons sewn on and the ends worked in.
